Program Outline

Nakatani Award

The Nakatani Foundation for Advancement of Measuring Technologies in BiomedicaCl Engineering has instituted the Nakatani Award (grand prix and incentive prize), in expectation of dramatic advances in the development of technology in the field of biomedical engineering measuring technologies, in order to award researchers who have achieved excellent work or those who are conducting uniquely creative research, and commends the appropriate researchers via our open invitation.

Research Fields Subject to Commendation

Biomedical engineering measuring technologies and related technologies.

Candidates for Commendation

1. Grand Prix
(1) Researchers who have achieved excellent work in biomedical engineering measuring technologies and are still conducting research activities.
(2) Members who belong or once belonged to an academic society, university, or equivalent research institute that is related to the research fields subject to commendation.

2. Incentive Prize
(1) Researchers conducting uniquely creative research on biomedical engineering measuring technologies.
(2) Researchers who are promising, in principle, at the age of 45 or younger as of the application closing day.
(3) Members who belong or once belonged to an academic society, university, or equivalent research institute that is related to the research fields subject to commendation.

Grant Program for Biomedical Engineering Research

The Nakatani Foundation for Advancement of Measuring Technologies in Biomedical Engineering, with a view to promoting the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies and thereby contributing to the development and improvement of people’s lives in Japan and the international community, carries out the following grant programs and invites public applications for research subjects for the grant.

Research Subjects for the Grant

Biomedical engineering measuring technologies and related technologies

Candidate for the Grant

1. Special Research
We will subsidize research expected to create a result that is outstanding and may lead to practical use by means of further evolving the development research that is critical in biomedical engineering measuring technologies.

2. Development research
Any research based on a creative concept and any technology expected to be of future practical use or one expected to contribute to it.

3. Encouragement of research
Any research based on a creative and hopeful concept and expected as a basic technology for future practical use. Since this grant program is intended for fostering young researchers, the age of the research leader should be 35 years or younger as of the application closing day.

Grant Program for Research Study

The Nakatani Foundation for Advancement of Measuring Technologies in Biomedical Engineering, with a view to promoting the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies and thereby contributing to the development and improvement of people’s lives in Japan and the international community, carries out the grant program for research study on technology trends and invites public applications for the grant.

Research Subjects for the Grant

Biomedical engineering measuring technologies and related technologies

Candidate for the Grant

Research study on technology trends conducted by individuals or various researchers.

Grant Program for Technology Exchanges

The Nakatani Foundation for Advancement of Measuring Technologies in Biomedical Engineering, with a view to promoting the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies and thereby contributing to the growth and improvement of people’s lives in Japan and the international community, carries out the following grant programs for researchers who exchange views with foreign experts and invites public applications for the grant.

[Exchange Programs]

1. Dispatch to overseas
We will subsidize part of the expenses for researchers (including graduates) and engineers who attend, give a research presentation, and exchange views with foreign experts at international conferences and workshops held overseas, and thereby contribute to the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies.

2. Invitation to Japan
We will subsidize part of the expenses for researchers and engineers who are invited from overseas to conferences, workshops, and technological meetings held in Japan and exchange views with Japanese experts and thereby contribute to the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies.

[Training Programs]
1. Overseas training
We will subsidize part of the expenses for researchers (including graduates) and engineers who undergo training at foreign universities and research institutes at their own expense and thereby contribute to the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies.

[Study Programs Overseas and in Japan]
1. Studying overseas
We will subsidize part of the expenses for researchers having finished a doctoral course or above and engineers who study at foreign universities and research institutes at their own expense and thereby contribute to the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies.

2. Studying in Japan
We will subsidize part of the expenses for researchers (including graduates) and engineers who study at Japanese universities and research institutes at their own expense and thereby contribute to the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies.

Grant Program for Global Research Internship

The Nakatani Foundation for Advancement of Measuring Technologies in Biomedical Engineering, with a view to promoting the development of biomedical engineering measuring technologies and thereby contributing to the development and improvement of people’s lives in Japan and the international community, carries out the grant programs for undergraduate students to experience high-technology research internships at university host labs abroad. While the current program is between the U.S. and Japan, we expect to expand it to involve European countries in the future.

Candidate for the Grant

Undergraduate student who major in a science or engineering field and has a strong and well-defined interest in international research.

Grant Program for Science Education Promotion

The Nakatani Foundation for Advancement of Measuring Technologies in Biomedical Engineering believe that raising children to have logical thinking skills and creativity will help not only the progress of science technology but also the development of society. Hence, we have sponsored a grant program for the promotion of science education in elementary, middle and high schools since FY2014.

We have three programs to support individual or collaborative activities of schools and teachers.

1. Grant for planning and practice of science classes and club activities at a school

2. Grant for activity programs jointly planned and operated by several schools

3. Grant for activity programs jointly planned and operated by several schools to support highly-motivated elementary school teachers
